When you are rewriting your headlines and introductions to suit the “voice” of your publication, be aware of what a little change in the emphasis of a sentence can do.

An article written by Anna Greer at New Matilda last year looks at how the use of the passive voice in writing can have a detrimental affect on how we view gender related violence. It is really worth a read. Link >>

Passive construction is where the object of an action is made into the subject of a sentence. In the article the following example is given: ‘the rice is being fried by the cook’ is a passive construction; while ‘the cook fried the rice’ is an active one.
