Not Quite Art
If you like your art to be a bit more about the stuff outside the major galleries, then this show is for you. Not Quite Art is hosted by Marcus Westbury, founder of the This is Not Art Festival in Newcastle. The show is on ABC TV on Tuesday nights at 10pm, or you can download the podcast here.
The first in the series looks at why the traditional art galleries seem to get so much funding for what I call Old Dead Guy Art, whereas the spaces that support living, breathing, contemporary (and sometimes women!) artists are all underfunded and in danger of closing. Marcus compares post-industrial Newcastle to Glasgow to see if their thriving art scenes exist because of their similar histories.
In the second of the series he looks at stencil art in Melbourne and a little bit of independent hip hop. It’s a really interesting show, so go have a look.
