Super Super


Super Super is causing quite a stir amongst the old-guard of magazine designers. The layout has been described as looking like “a clown has been sick”. But the creative director, Steve Slocombe, says that within the chaos there is order – text blocks are only ever 40mm or 90mm wide and there is a restricted use of size and font (Helvetic and Times only). There is no underlying grid however, pages are designed “organically” instead.

The haphazard design of Super Super appeals directly to the MySpace generation, those with short attention spans and a natural sense of DIY culture. Bright colours are used to great affect – almost as a way of saying “up yours” to the previous generation’s love of a restricted colour palette.

My design jury is still out on this one. I wouldn’t read it myself, but I more than appreciate that I am WAY out of the target market! It does look kinda fun though. What do you all think?
